"If I find in myself desires which nothing in the world can satisfy, the only logical explanation is that I was made for another world." - C.S Lewis
“So, are you satisfied?” That was the penetrating question I was asked while sitting in the office last September afternoon. This was not a mere question relating to happiness but rather a weighing of obedience and seizing opportunity in seeking faithfulness. This was the day God invited me to go to Africa. In this moment had to answer if moving closer to and committing to my current job which I valued, was fully living in accordance to God’s deepest purpose for my life or if I was the mountain in the way at this time. That day, I felt a shift and yet unexplainable peace in my heart, knowing what may soon follow. Soon after, I chose to RSVP to the invitation given that day, now instructed to leave my loved position to be available and completely unattached to go where and whenever He would lead. The next few months that followed this decision were not lacking in any way, as it has been confirmed each moment finds itself most full step by step and day by day.
I am preparing to embark on a 3-4 month ministry to Africa. I will leave May 9th and return August 2016 from this vision trip where I will be sent to learn, listen and respond in partnership to the work in which God is already moving in and doing. During my time in Africa I will be partnering in and with various ministries and communities. I will head out with a team from Life Pacific College where we will be connecting with different ministries and churches and connecting with locals through vacation bible schools and medical outreaches in the Kenya Villages. After, I will be traveling up to The Living Room International Ministry's Kimbilio 24 bed, inpatient hospice home that provides quality palliative care services to adults and children living with life-threatening illnesses while offering honor, hope and spiritual support. LRMI reaches out to the surrounding community to those who are not only faced with life-threatening illnesses, but who also lack the love and care that signify human dignity. While here, I will be a hand in various aspects of care from building relationships with those living there, praying by the bedside of those who are ill, to helping with local outreaches and more.
As I continue from there, I will have the privilege in a longer stay of 1-2 months in Jinja Uganda, volunteering at a children's home that lives the vision of being a voice for and providing a safe place to those who have been rejected or marginalized from their community due to their disabilities. It is not uncommon for these people to be shunned by their communities and even their own families. In Uganda, living with special needs is often seen as a curse. This home provides a temporary safe and nurturing environment for people living with special needs to come to know love, acceptance, and a place to call home for a little while the team works with the local communities and families in an effort to change the negative views while empowering families to better care for their child living with special needs. By showing God's grace to children in Uganda living with disabilities, this ministry wishes to see each child that comes through their doors transformed by His glory.
With a call, vision and invitation beyond me, I am convinced that there is nothing I would rather be doing with the time and opportunity I have been given than this. I am joyed with the thought of partnering with ministries overseas who are providing quality care services to adults and children living with life-threatening illnesses and others who are working with children with disabilities in the Kenya and Uganda areas. These ministries carry the understanding and belief that no one should do life or suffer alone while hold the view that relationships built on faith in Christ are an essential component to abundant living. I am both excited and honored to share in such opportunities which are empowering many lives by investing in their worth, value, and their identity as a child of God; completely loved by Him. I look forward to sharing some of the stories, faces and hearts I will have the privilege to build relationships and connect with along the way.
May this trip of connecting, learning, listening and loving, which is only a piece in a grandeur story, be empowering, informative and encouraging to you. Please follow along!
